Call for abstracts for a Global Campus publication on the theme of “Reconceptualising Exile

This publication is being planned in the context of a programme which we jointly implement with Right Livelihood to support human rights experts and defenders in exile. The programme combines a fellowship with network-building activities, as well as a research component which this book publication will be part of.

We are excited to share the call for abstracts with you in the hope of drawing on the rich network of Global Campus academics to solicit contributions to this publication. Its main purpose is to reconceptualise traditional (mostly negative) notions of exile in today’s sociopolitical landscape, unpacking interconnections with narratives of migration, refuge, new notions of mobility, identity and belonging. It also looks at human rights work in exile, its opportunities and the pressures it is under, and incorporates storytelling elements in collaboration with the participants of the fellowship – for more information, see the attached concept note. It includes a non-exhaustive list of questions which were raised during a research workshop with the fellowship participants which might be of inspiration to you. In particular, we hope to draw on the strength of the global GC network to include submissions from all our different Global Campus regions. In this regard, please feel free to further share with GC lecturers or alumni from your region who might have an academic interest in this topic. The deadline for submissions is 15 August 2025, and they should include the abstract (in English, 500 words max) and a bio of the author(s), and be sent to me at imke.steimann@gchumanrights.org.
