University of Sarajevo promoted 55 doctors of science
The ceremonial promotion of University of Sarajevo Doctor of Sciences was held on 23 June 2022, at the National Theater in Sarajevo.
Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, University of Sarajevo Rector, Vice-Rectors and Deans promoted 55 PhD candidates in the fields belonging to the groups of humanities, social, medical, natural-mathematical and biotechnical sciences as well as the Technical Sciences Group.
The ceremony was opened by Rector Škrijelj, emphasizing that 55 candidates passed, like all previous generations of doctors of science and arts at the University of Sarajevo, a very demanding path of academic advancement and improvement, filled with numerous challenges and sacrifices.
“Tomorrow, our community, burdened with numerous difficulties and problems that, unfortunately, we witness every day, expects and needs your dedicated and full engagement in science, academia and community, which will enable our state of Bosnia and Herzegovina to its internal and external challenges are answered by actions that will, among other things, be based on your scientific and professional contribution and work. I emphasize this because, considering the totality of global and national temptations we face, I believe that we must not allow ourselves the luxury of being silent observers of a pregnant everyday life. In order to seriously accept this role, which, I sincerely hope, recognize and accept, you must remain committed to excellence in your scientific and academic work,” stated, among other things, Rector Škrijelj. He added that scientific and academic excellence, in addition to ensuring your further scientific progress and achievement, also builds the authority of knowledge and science in society, which is invaluable, because only knowledge and science, guided by humanistic and civilizational values, have the potential to help stop the spiral of negative movements and initiate positive processes of sustainable and human development.”
At the ceremony, messages were sent by the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, Mr. Edin Forto, Minister of Science, Higher Education and Youth of KS Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Nikolić, and Sarajevo Mayor, Dr. Benjamina Karić.
In addressing the audience, Prime Minister Forto reminded that science and research are directly related to the progress of society and that the invested funds are returned fourfold. "You are the link that connects the economy, society, art, culture ..., you are the only ones who can lead us forward," said Prime Minister Forto. He stated that times are changing, that BiH may never regain the title of industrial giant, and that the salvation for Bosnia and Herzegovina is to become a knowledge society, to multiply the example of doctors promoted today.
“The academic community is not heard. We live in a society where the Duning-Kruger effect has swept the public space so much, where anyone who knows something is questioning themselves, and people who have no idea claim they are right. You 55 here know this very well. As of today, carrying this wonderful doctoral degree, you are taking responsibility, not only to work properly in your work and academic environment, but you also have to go public,” said Prime Minister Forto.
Minister Nikolić stated that this solemn act marks the moment when the society recognizes and celebrates achievements, commitment and sacrifice, emphasizes that from today our society is richer and stronger, that it is more able to respond in a creative way to very complex challenges we face locally. and globally. She said “I hope that you are ready and motivated to accept the challenges, that you are ready to build collaborative networks with all people of good will, to apply their knowledge and creativity by creating new, innovative solutions that will shape a brighter future for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Imagine and strive to achieve what seems impossible today - create a responsible, open, inclusive, free-minded and progressive Bosnia and Herzegovina in which trust will be nurtured and dignity and integrity valued, recognized and respected.”
Congratulating on the exceptional academic and scientific achievement, Minister Nikolić added: “Do not lose the desire to study, to understand the world around you. Encourage others to take the hard way, to accept challenges, to offer solutions, to constantly learn and progress. I am sure that you will be the hope and pride of your family, the University of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
Mayor Karić also sent a message to the doctoral students, emphasizing: “You are not finishing your education today, on the contrary, today, each in his own field of creativity, you are entering the magnificent world of scientific research, which will develop your personality and constructively contribute to our community.”
She reminded that only among scholars do the brave grow up, who are able to reshape and improve relationships and understanding among people. “It's a great honor, but it's also a great responsibility” Mayor Karić pointed out, and added “our homeland desperately needs you, as educated, moral, courageous, with new ideas that break down stereotypes. Change is the only constant.”
Mayor Karić stated that only learned, moral people are able to remove everything that threatens our peace and undermines our dignified life, and congratulated the doctoral students and said: "I want the virtues of humanity to constantly adorn and strengthen you, to constantly contribute creatively, by character and deed, to restore the jewel of our age-old being, our communion.
Aiming towards the knowledge society, the University of Sarajevo promoted: 9 candidates for the doctorate of medical sciences, 8 candidates for the doctorate of technical sciences, 4 candidates for the doctorate of economics and law, 3 candidates for the doctorate of political and health sciences, each 2 candidates for doctors of sociological, literary, historical and chemical sciences, and 1 candidate for doctors of Islamic, social, security, criminological, administrative, literary history, linguistic, psychological, food technology, agricultural, computer, biological, mathematical and biotechnical science, as well as a doctor of social work and a doctor of physics.
On behalf of the promoted UNSA Doctors of Sciences, Dr. Nevena Mahmutbegović, Doctor of Medical Sciences, said: “Today we celebrate knowledge! Today we celebrate the most beautiful human virtues: diligence, effort, dedication, devotion, renunciation of personal pleasures, for a greater and more significant goal. Today is the crown of many years of work and research in order to improve scientific knowledge and deepen the knowledge gained so far. " She also stated: "From this place, we say that we will keep the energy and enthusiasm for further work and improvement, we will try to be innovative and keep track of time, each in his field of interest and thus contribute to world science because science is universal. We will strive to promote science, strive for excellence, spread and share knowledge, be inspiring to young people so that together we can contribute to the progress of our academic community and thus to the progress of our homeland. Let's build it with science, be active members of the community, inspiration for future generations! Let's build it to be a country where everyone wants to live.”
