The University of Sarajevo promoted 42 Doctors of Science
The promotion of the University of Sarajevo Doctors of Sciences took place at the National Theater in Sarajevo on 16 December 2021 in compliance with the valid measures of epidemiological protection.
Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, University of Sarajevo Rector, Vice-Rectors and Deans promoted 42 PhD candidates into Doctors of Sciences.
“We must be proud of our doctoral students who have achieved the greatest academic title with their sacrifice and hard work, which brings joy, enthusiasm and desire for a better tomorrow, but also great responsibility,” said Rector Škrijelj and expressed confidence that the University of Sarajevo has everything which needs to be a university for Europe's future. “This is true for many reasons related to the strength of our faculties and academies, but above all because of our doctoral students who are the greatest strength of this University,” Rector Škrijelj underlined.
In his address, Rector Škrijelj said that as of today, their decisions and the obligations they take on are becoming a generator of new scientific and social trends. Congratulations to all doctoral students on this exceptional life and academic achievement, and best wishes for success in professional and personal work, Rector Škrijelj pointed out that today's promotion of 42 doctors of science is a kind of confirmation that the University of Sarajevo will be committed to production in the future modern doctoral studies that follow trends in Europe and the world.
Mr. Edin Forto, Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton, also congratulated the doctoral students on their success, emphasizing that they have become an economic force of our society. He underlined that investing in science and research is by far the best investment in any society, and that what is invested in research and development is returned to society many times over. Prime Minister Forto told the doctoral students to use all possible channels to bring research and development to their home university, and to continue working in cooperation with the region and the rest of Europe and the world. He reminded that the current Government of the Sarajevo Canton set aside record amounts for research and development, but also emphasized that it is economically very important that doctoral students contribute to the development of the entire society.
Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Nikolić, Minister of Science, Higher Education and Youth of Sarajevo Canton, told the doctoral students to open the door to a new era in their lives with this solemn act, but at the same time to open the door to the future of our country Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Aiming towards the knowledge society, the University of Sarajevo promoted: 9 candidates for the doctorate of technical sciences, 5 candidates for the doctorate of medical sciences, 4 candidates for the doctorate of law, 3 candidates for the doctorate of linguistics, 2 candidates for the doctorate of political science , administrative, literary-historical and chemical sciences, and 1 candidate each for the degree of Doctor of Social Work, Doctor of Science in Sports and Physical Education, and Doctor of Economics, Security, Islamic, Social, Health, Pharmaceutical, Educational, Agricultural, Food Technology, Biological and Veterinary sciences.
On behalf of the promoted doctors of science of the University of Sarajevo, Dr. Elma Durmišević-Cernica, Doctor of Linguistics, pointed out: “This solemn act of promotion is formally an event that ends the process of acquiring the academic title of Doctor of Science, but we know that this is our beginning in constantly acquiring knowledge and teaching others; continuing to work and apply it in different areas of life and, finally, this is just another step in a series towards the academic excellence we strive for. “
The promotion of the Doctor of Science of the University of Sarajevo was organized as part of the celebration of the 72nd University of Sarajevo’s Anniversary and the UNSA Ceremonial December Days.
