Realized school of media law of the Faculty of Law, University of Sarajevo and OSCE Mission to BiH
From 14 to 19 September 2021, UNSA Faculty of Law, in cooperation with the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, implemented a school of media law “Freedom of expression and freedom of assembly online.” The school is the result of cooperation between the Faculty of Law and the OSCE Mission, which was initiated within the participation of students of the Faculty of Law, in regional and world media law competitions (Monroe E Price Media Law Moot Court Competition). The school was held in Sarajevo, with the participation of 21 law students in Sarajevo, Zenica, Bihac, Banja Luka, Mostar and Tuzla.
During the six-day School, students had the opportunity to get acquainted with current trends in the field of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly online. The first part of the School included workshops with the following topics and lecturers:
- Freedom of expression online (Igor Ličina and Šejla Maslo Cerkić, OSCE Mission to BiH),
- Freedom of assembly online (Dr. Kristina Ćendić, SHARE Foundation Belgrade),
- Positive obligations of the state from Article 10 and Article 11 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (Dr. Nedim Kulenović, OSCE Mission to BiH),
- Experience of self-regulation of print and online media (Maida Bahto Kestendžić, Press and Online Media Council of BiH),
- Online media self-regulation - the case of FacebookOversight Board (assistant Nasir Muftić and assistant Tahir Herenda, Faculty of Law in Sarajevo),
- Case study: Trump vs. Facebook (assistant Harun Išerić, Faculty of Law in Sarajevo).
The second part of the School was dedicated to competition in a trial simulation, based on a hypothetical case concerning the positive obligation of the state in the case of hate speech online and violent gatherings.
The school aimed to affirm the interest of students and future lawyers for one, relatively young, branch of law that they cannot learn about during their full-time studies. Also, one of her significant contributions is the networking of students from all over BiH who have an interest in certain areas/issues of media law. The success of the School and its quality is evidenced by the intention of the OSCE Mission to support the organization and implementation of a similar event in the future.
