Minister Husić-Mehmedović and Rector Škrijelj visited Three University of Sarajevo Scientific Institutes
On 9 March 2021, as part of the continuation of the visit to the University of Sarajevo organizational units, Minister of Science, Higher Education and Youth of KS, Prof. Dr. Melika Husić-Mehmedović and University of Sarajevo Rector, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj visited three University scientific institutes: the Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law, the Institute for Language and the Institute for History. The visit to the Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law was also attended by Prof. Dr. Jasmin Ahić, President of the Council of the Social Sciences Group.
The visits were used to present to the management of the institute the activities of the Ministry related to the preparation of the new law on higher education, as well as the law on scientific research, and the current processes conducted at the level of the Ministry. In her addresses, Minister Husić-Mehmedović emphasized that the visits to scientific institutes were organized in order to see the circumstances in which the institutes operate, as well as the priorities and problems that need to be addressed in the synergy of the University and the Ministry. She also emphasized the importance of scientific institutes and their contribution to the creation of a better and more stimulating scientific research environment, and the development of society through excellence in science.
The drafting of a new law on higher education in KS, as well as the law on scientific research, spatial capacities, and modalities of investing in scientific research and conducting scientific research activities were just some of the topics of conversation.
During the visit, the heads of all three organizational units presented to Minister Husić-Mehmedović the key activities and results from the work activity, and especially emphasized the achievements in the publishing activity and presented the infrastructure capacities.
During the visit, Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law Director, Prof. Dr. Rasim Muratović presented the development of the Institute since its establishment, human and spatial capacities, and reminded that the Institute scientifically and professionally investigates and deals with crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity and other serious violations of international humanitarian law in Bosnia and Herzegovina. and abroad, from the historical, criminological, legal, economic, demographic, sociological, political, cultural, medical, ecological and other aspects of importance for a comprehensive scientific and professional understanding of these crimes. He especially emphasized the work of the Institute on the conceptualization and development of scientific research projects, and underlined almost all the research of the Institute includes very demanding and expensive field work. Director Muratović also stated that in 2020, preparations began for the publication of the Institute's journal - the Institute's Yearbook in Bosnian and English, which will be the first journal in the Balkans specialized in researching war crimes and genocide crimes.
During the visit to the Language Institute, the director of the Institute Dr. Alen Kalajdžija expressed satisfaction with the visit and the opportunity to present the Institute, and presented information on the organizational structure of the Institute, human resources and key projects. It was emphasized that the mission of the Institute for Language is the development and dissemination of language culture, systematic scientific research and development of languages and language forms on the principles of scientific excellence, as well as publishing the results of work with constant education of staff for science. Also, Dr. Kalajdžija informed about the important traditional manifestation of the Language Institute - Days of the Language Institute 2021, which is held from 21 February to 21 March and this year it was organized in an online format. He announced the jubilee 50th anniversary of the Language Institute to be celebrated next year.
During the visit Dr. Sedad Bešlija, Director of the Institute of History, reminded that this institute is the leading scientific institution in the field of historiography in Bosnia and Herzegovina, specializing in the study of the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the early Middle Ages to the present day. He emphasized that during 2020, which was marked by extraordinary circumstances caused by the pandemic, enviable results and significant scientific achievements were achieved, and speaking about the activities in 2021, Dr. Bešlija states that it is planned to continue the census of the Institute's library fund, to continue digitizing institute publications, indexing institute journals, archival research of associates, working on individual projects, publishing scientific papers of the Institute associates in journals in the country and abroad, promoting new editions and developing international cooperation.
