The University of Sarajevo promoted 42 Doctors of Sciences
The ceremonial promotion of the University of Sarajevo Doctors of Sciences took place on 19 June 2024, at the National Theater in Sarajevo. Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, UNSA Rector, Vice-Rectors and Deans promoted 42 candidates into Doctors of Sciences.
In his welcome address, Prof. Dr. Škrijelj, emphasized that today's ceremony is an exceptional opportunity to celebrate the academic and scientific success of 42 exceptional individuals and to encourage them to open new chapters of their academic and professional careers as soon as possible.
“As the Rector of the University of Sarajevo, who is about to the end his second term, I have every right to point out that the promotions of doctoral students, together with the promotions of graduates and masters, are unique moments that fill us with a sense of pride, since it is precisely on these occasions that we witness the results of the work of the University of Sarajevo. “The promotion of doctoral students has additional strength because it highlights the commitment, strength and intellectual strength of the scientific and academic community of Bosnia and Herzegovina and guarantees its sustainable development,” emphasized Rector Škrijelj.
He emphasized that the title of Doctor of Science is not the end of their academic journey, but the beginning of a new phase in their lives, and that there are many challenges and opportunities ahead of them. He especially emphasized the importance of academic and professional integrity, and told the doctoral students: “Let integrity be your guide in future research and work.” Ethical behavior, respect for the rules and principles of scientific objectivity are the basis on which strong academic institutions and professional communities are built. Integrity is not only a matter of personal ethics, but is crucial for building trust in science, education and the profession. Only through honest work and unbiased research do we contribute to the progress of our society and the strengthening of the institutions on which it rests.”
Congratulating the promoted PhD candidates, Rector Škrijelj emphasized that the University of Sarajevo will always remain their home, the place where they gained knowledge and skills, but also the place they can always return to for support and advice.
“Continue to be committed, inspired and driven by integrity. The world needs you, and we are proud of you”, Rector Škrijelj said at today's ceremony.
On behalf of the Federal Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Dr. Jasna Duraković, advisor for higher education, science and technology, Dr. Seid Masnica addressed the audience. He told doctoral students that today's promotion is another beginning for them, and emphasized that the title of Doctor of Science represents not only prestige, but also a significant responsibility towards science and all aspects of life in contemporary Bosnian society. He reminded that the Federal Ministry of Education and Science allocated 33% more funds for science this year.
On behalf of the newly promoted University of Sarajevo Doctors, Dr. Tatjana Žarković, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, pointing out that this day is dedicated to celebrating knowledge and achievements. “This festive event is the result of years of hard work, research and persistence in order to expand the boundaries of human knowledge”, she stated, and added that today, more than ever, the world is looking for knowledge that connects, brings closer and builds bridges between people. “Our differences are our strength, and through science and art we can contribute to understanding and common progress. Knowledge is not only a tool for personal success, but also the key to collective good. Let our work be a beacon that lights the way to a better future, where the values of community, peace and cooperation are respected. As PhDs, we bear the responsibility to be the bearers of change that will improve our community and the world in which we live. I believe that with such talented and dedicated people, the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina looks brighter than ever”, said Dr. Žarković.
Striving towards a knowledge society, the University of Sarajevo promoted: 7 PhD candidates into Doctors of Medical Sciences, 6 into Doctors of Educational Sciences, 4 candidates into Doctors of Veterinary Sciences, 3 into Doctors of Technical, Economic and Health Sciences, 2 each into Doctors of Political, Social, Security, Linguistic and Biological Sciences, and 1 candidate each into Doctors of Psychological, Sociological, Agricultural, Mathematical, Geographical and Biotechnical Sciences.
