Faculty of Political Sciences hosted a panel “Returning the Left to the Present”
On 18 December 2019 the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Sarajevo hosted a public panel discussion “Returning the Left to the Present.”
The public debate is a continuation of last year's regional debate “What should the new left of the Balkans do with the past?”, which highlighted the problem of the modern left losing important battles in the present while residing in the past. Contributing to this is the global situation on the left, a moment in the spirit of the times in which someone like Handke wins the Nobel Prize, while at the same time, progressive efforts like those of Jeremy Corbyn are defeated in the UK election. In the Bosnian context, the left almost disappeared, sinking into the right, nationalist narratives of the 1990s.
At the panel, after the attendees were greeted by the Dean, Prof. Dr. Sead Turčalo, Prof. Dr. Svjetlana Nedimović, social activist and researcher at the University of Barcelona, Prof. Dr. Nerzuk Ćurak, Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Senadin Musabegović, Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, and Davorka Turk from the Center for Nonviolent Action in Sarajevo spoke. The panel was moderated by a senior assistant at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo, M.Sc. Jasmin Hasanović.
The debate was also an opportunity to present a book by Dr. Svjetlana Nedimović – “Tragom Korčanice: Povratak ljevice u sadašnjost“ which, as Prof. Dr. Ćurak said represents the history of our present, the history of small, extra-parliamentary struggles over the past ten years on the left, activist scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Otherwise, the event was supported by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program and the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA The Debt) fund.
