Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, University of Sarajevo Rector awarded the Sixth April Award of the City of Sarajevo for his contribution in the field of science and education
The solemn session of the City of Sarajevo City Council of the on the occasion of 6 April - the Day of the City of Sarajevo was held in the City Hall. The session was opened by the chairman of the City Council, Mr. Jasmin Ademović, emphasizing that April 6 is meaningful for Sarajevo because it reminds of the war sufferings of the city and the victory over fascism, which is contrary to the traditional being of Sarajevo.
The Mayor of the City of Sarajevo Doz. Dr. Benjamina Karić spoke about the importance of April 6 and the fight against fascism that took place in Sarajevo 77 years ago, and stressed that the fight for freedom must not be forgotten.
“Let us therefore guard, let us jealously guard our eternal fire of freedom, our memory of those who gave their lives so that we could live freely today. That freedom was not taken away from us even years later, it was not even killed by some new fascists with half a million grenades that fell on this city from 1992 to 1995,” pointed out Mayor Karić.
This year's Sarajevo Sixth Awards were presented at the ceremonial session. Mayor Karić and Chairman Ademović presented the award for contribution in the field of economy to the Company for Transport and Services “Alternativa,” Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, University of Sarajevo Rector for his contribution in the field of science and education, and Prim. Dr. Željko Ler for his contribution in the field of health and social protection.
Prof. Škrijelj congratulated the present officials and guests, as well as all citizens of Sarajevo, on April 6 - the Day of the City of Sarajevo and the day of the liberation of our city.
Recognitions and awards of the City of Sarajevo were presented at the session.
The citizens of Sarajevo awarded the "Graham Bamford" award posthumously to Džebrail Šišić, medical technician of the Sarajevo Ambulance.
The Graham Bamford Award was awarded posthumously to the commander of the Sarajevo Igman 55 unit, Nermin-Beli Sukić.
The Graham Bamford Award was also given to Huso Sinanović, who saved a girl from the water in the flood.
The winners of the Graham Bamford Award are also the nurse of the Sarajevo General Hospital, Prim. Dr. Abdulah Nakaš ” Amela Trbić and nurse of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo Lejla Šopović.
At a ceremonial session on the occasion of the City Day, the City Council of the City of Sarajevo posthumously declared Jordi Pujol Puente, a Catalan photojournalist killed in 1992 during the siege of Sarajevo, an honorary citizen.
The plaque of the City of Sarajevo was awarded to the Dogs Trust BiH Foundation.
The Plaque of the City of Sarajevo award was posthumously awarded to the architect and associate professor of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sarajevo, Sead Gološ.
The plaque of the City of Sarajevo was awarded to the top athlete, Olympian and coach Islam Đugum.
