The monograph “University of Sarajevo (2016-2024): Reform and Integration” promoted

At the University of Sarajevo's Rectorate Ceremonial Hall on 26 December 2024, as part of the 75th University Anniversary and the ceremonial December days, the monograph “University of Sarajevo (2016-2024): Reform and Integration” was promoted.

This monograph provides a comprehensive overview of the University of Sarajevo's activities from 2016 to 2024, focusing on teaching, students, scientific research, international cooperation, quality management, and other vital aspects of the University's work. Particular emphasis is placed on promoting academic ceremonies, recognitions, and awards, as well as significant events such as lectures, conferences, and publication promotions.

The event was attended by the Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, and the promoters: Prof. Emeritus Dr. Muhamed Dželilović, Prof. Dr. Senada Kalabušić, Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Nikolić, Prof. Dr. Sandra Bjelan, and Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, the chief editor of the monograph. The promotion was moderated by Mr. Sc. Nadina Grebović-Lendo.

Rector Tarik Zaimović emphasized the importance of the monograph as a document that gains value over time: “Monographs are documents that have value only when a certain amount of time has passed. They usually represent a snapshot of time that you don't appreciate until time has passed, and then you return and reflect through a different prism of the past that you may have lived or tried to understand through the experiences of those who lived it.”

Prof. Emeritus Dr. Muhamed Dželilović, one of the promoters and reviewers, highlighted the significance of the recorded results in the reform and integration of the University: “This monograph accurately and statistically shows that the reform and integration of the largest university in Bosnia and Herzegovina have yielded positive results. Progress is visible in every field of work: teaching activities, scientific research, international cooperation, quality management, and other important segments of the University's work.”

Promoter and reviewer Prof. Dr. Senada Kalabušić emphasized the importance of reforms and achievements of the University of Sarajevo during the past period. “The monograph we are presenting today provides insight into the reforms that the University of Sarajevo has undertaken to achieve three set goals and become a leader in scientific research, education, and social sense. In this period, the University of Sarajevo has become an institution that takes pride in its achieved excellence, establishing new research centers, improving infrastructure, and expanding international cooperation.”

Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Nikolić, a former pro-rector for international cooperation at the University of Sarajevo and former minister of science, higher education, and youth of the Sarajevo Canton, highlighted the significance of reforms and achievements of the University of Sarajevo, which has become a recognizable leader in scientific excellence, international cooperation, and strengthening its capacities.

Prof. Dr. Sandra Bjelan, a promoter, emphasized the importance of the monograph as evidence of the University's efforts and capacities in creating opportunities for staying and growing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially during the time of withdrawal and departure. She referred to key initiatives that contribute to strengthening the quality of work and experience at the University, such as the TRAIN program and the establishment of the Office for Student Support.

The chief editor of the monograph, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, former University of Sarajevo Rector during the 2016-2020 and 2020-2024 mandate periods, stated: “The monograph we are presenting today represents the culmination of eight years of work at the University of Sarajevo during my mandate, which covers the period from 2016 to 2024. This publication contains all the key steps and reforms that have been implemented in recent years, and the conclusions represent guidelines for further development and progress of the university.”

The monograph does not only provide an overview of achievements but also reflects the path from 2016 to the present, offering a clear picture of what the University has achieved and where it is headed.

“University autonomy is a fundamental value, not only for our institution but also for higher education and science in general. The freedom of researchers, free minds, and unrestricted freedom of action are key to achieving real results. The University of Sarajevo should be an institution around which we gather and which is the most important resource of our country. Our task is to educate students in the best possible way, to objectively evaluate them, and to provide them with access to practical work. We will continue to fight for the autonomy of the University, which we must never abuse,” said Prof. Dr Škrijelj.
