The Faculty of Forestry, University of Sarajevo marked the World Environment Day
Organized by KJP "Sarajevo Forests" d.o.o. on the occasion of the World Environment Day, which is celebrated every year on June 5 on the anniversary of the United Nations Conference in Stockholm (1972) dedicated to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), delegations from the UNSA Forestry Faculty and the Forestry Students Association are a special event on the occasion of this important date.
With millions of plant and animal species facing the threat of extinction, protecting biodiversity has never been as important as it is today. On that occasion, a visit to the jewel of Europe and Bosnia and Herzegovina was organized. forest ecosystem, Ravna Vala rainforest, which is located only 20 minutes from Sarajevo. In that way, the importance, preservation and perspective of the mentioned rainforest as the most important ecosystem in the Sarajevo Canton were pointed out. Attendees also visited the location of the Nordic Fields Nordic Trails on the Olympic Mountain Igman, where the 53rd European Forestry Competition in Nordic Disciplines (EFNS) will be held, which is planned for February 2022, which was declared a public event by the Sarajevo Canton Government. interest.
During the visit to the Ravna Vala rainforest, an educational lecture was given by professors from the Faculty of Forestry UNSA, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Lojo, Prof. Dr. Mersudin Avdibegović and Prof. Dr. Sead Vojniković.
"This is a unique example of a rainforest, untouched nature in which man has had no, except scientific, intervention. In the rainforest, any human intervention such as felling, dragging old, fallen trees, picking forest plants and the like is strictly forbidden. When a tree falls under the influence of snow and wind or from old age, it remains in the rainforest ", pointed out in his address the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Lojo.
It is important to note that the Ravna Vala rainforest is located between the Bjelašnica and Igman mountains, whose wood mass is significantly higher than the surrounding forests, and the height of some trees reaches a height of 40 meters. It is distributed in an altitude interval between 1,280 and 1,440 meters above sea level with a dominant eastern and southeastern exposure. In the Ravna Vala rainforest, in addition to other wild animals, there is also a brown bear, which is the largest wild animal in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
