Research Stay at the Institute for Urban and Regional Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna

Prof. Dr. Elša Turkušić Jurić, Associate Professor, stayed in Vienna from 1 to 9 September 2026 at the Institute for Urban and Regional Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ISR-OeAW) under a Culture Moves Europe – Individual Mobility grant. The stay was focused on acquiring new knowledge and insights into various approaches and practices, as well as developing future international cooperation in the field of regenerating 20th-century housing culture.

The program included a lecture, an introduction to the research projects of the ISR-OeAW Institute, and an exchange of experiences with members of the Gebietsbetreuung Stadterneuerung (GB) team. A special part of the stay was dedicated to fieldwork and the analysis of different models of housing construction and regeneration in Vienna, focusing on their role in achieving social and climate sustainability. Accompanied by local architects and experts, the settlements of Asperngrund, Sonnwendviertel, Werkbundsiedlung Wien, Alterlaa, and Aspern Seestadt were visited, as well as the Rotes Wien housing complexes. The program also included tours of individual buildings that represent significant examples of functional, aesthetic, and technological innovation characteristic of their time, with special emphasis on the works of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Otto Wagner, Josef Frank, Adolf Loos, and Harry Glück.

This research stay represents a continuation of Prof. Dr. Elša Turkušić Jurić's work on the preservation, transformation, and regeneration of modernist housing settlements, with a particular focus on approaches that incorporate their existing spatial, social, and cultural values into change processes.
