Regional debate: What should the new Balkan left do with the past
The UNSA Faculty of Political Sciences will host a regional debate on “What Should the New Balkans Left do with the Past” organized by the University of Barcelona on Thursday, 15 November 2018, at 17:00.
Historical revisionism spreads like a wildfire through the region and feeds the modern rightwing, while anti-fascism is present only in commemorative ceremonies, occasional iconography and slogans. In the recent past, 1990s, there is a fuel for right-wing forces and the left is most often intervened in it only in the strictly controlled manner of the civil opposition. The old leftist party is at best defensive - in the worst it is, the right-wing accomplice. The new left, most often non-institutional, leads fragmented battles through direct actions and propaganda, but there is no clear-cut, consolidated strategy, and the debate on whether the radical left should deal with the past.
