Project description

IFIGENEIA aims to advance nuclear medicine by promoting compact, efficient linear accelerator (LINAC) technology as a sustainable approach to radioisotope production. The project supports research, medical diagnostics, therapy and theranostics and seeks to establish Excellence Hubs in Greece, Slovenia and Cyprus. It connects universities, research institutions, healthcare providers, businesses, public authorities and civil society to strengthen innovation and long-term investment. Mentorship and knowledge transfer activities also support research capacity development in the Western Balkans.

Project objectives

  1. Develop sustainable LINAC-based approaches for producing radioisotopes for medical and other societal applications.
  2. Establish and connect Excellence Hubs in Greece, Slovenia and Cyprus.
  3. Strengthen cooperation between academia, industry, healthcare, public institutions and civil society.
  4. Support skills development, mentorship, knowledge transfer and research excellence in the Western Balkans.
  5. Develop investment and business strategies that support long-term sustainability and innovation.

Role of the University of Sarajevo

The University of Sarajevo participates in several project work packages and acts primarily as a mentoring-receiving partner. Project is implemented by the Faculty of Science Team, which through cooperation with leading European institutions, contributes to multidisciplinary research, knowledge exchange and the strengthening of scientific capacities. The University is also working towards establishing an Ion Source Laboratory in Sarajevo, with the aim of developing expertise relevant to next-generation LINAC technologies and their societal applications.

Expected results

  • Three Excellence Hubs supporting LINAC-related research and innovation.
  • Enhanced regional cooperation, training and knowledge transfer.
  • Strengthened research capabilities at the University of Sarajevo, including progress towards an Ion Source Laboratory.
  • Business and investment planning for sustainable isotope-production infrastructure.
  • Broader opportunities for innovation in nuclear medicine and other societal applications.
