Talks about the international cooperation between the University of Sarajevo and Nottingham Trent University from Great Britain and the achieved goals

Razgovori o međunarodnoj saradnji Univerziteta u Sarajevu i Nottingham Trent Univerziteta iz Velike Britanije i ostvarenim ciljevima

Recognized experts in the field of engineering chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences: Dr. Farooq Sher and Dr. Emina K. Sher, visited the University of Sarajevo where they met with Rector, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj and Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Enita Nakaš. The meeting was also attended by professors from the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Mirza Nuhanović and Prof. Dr. Jasmina Sulejmanović, and M.Sc. Miroslav Živanović, Head of the Rector’s Office.

Dr. Farooq Sher is a PhD in Engineering Chemistry and currently teaches in the Department of Engineering in the School of Natural and Technical Sciences at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom. Dr. Emina K. Sher, who holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, is employed by the International Society for Engineering Science and Technology, also based in Nottingham, United Kingdom.

The meeting discussed the international cooperation between the University of Sarajevo and Nottingham Trent University from Great Britain and the achieved goals stated in the Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities signed on 1 June 2022.

International cooperation begins with the engagement of Prof. Farooq Sher in 2020 on the project “Study of a pilot plant for the removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater using agro-waste-based sorbents” funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science, which makes a huge contribution to research and the implementation of project activities.

Since then, until today, Prof. Sher participated in various activities, strengthening international cooperation through research, conferences, organizing workshops, lectures, writing chapters in books, and participating as a plenary lecturer at the 4th International Congress of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, organized by the Association of Chemists and Technologists of Sarajevo Canton and University of Sarajevo - Faculty of Science and Mathematics.

The outcome of this inter-university collaboration is the result of 16 published scientific papers in the prestigious World Journals Web of Science, of which 14 are Q1, and among others, one of the papers represents pioneering research in the domain of renewable energy sources in BiH (“Prospects of renewable energy potentials and development in Bosnia and Herzegovina - A review”). One of the last activities based on this cooperation is participation in the COST project “European metal-organic framework network: combining research and development to promote technological solutions.”

Future goals will include new research, participation in new research projects (IPA, HORIZON, ERASMUS...) and conferences, and teaching activities at both universities that are signatories to the Agreement.
