On Thursday, 10 December 2020, the Musicological Society of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Music Academy of the University of Sarajevo will open the 12th edition of the Biennial International Musicological Symposium “Music in Society".”
According to one of the founders of the Symposium, Prof. Emeritus Dr. Ivan Čavlović, the vision behind the founding of the Symposium in 1998 was “to establish war-torn human ties and to include contemporary Bosnian musicology in world musicological trends.” After 22 years, the Symposium has continuously exceeded the intentions of its founders, reaching the position of one of the most important regional meeting points for musicologists, ethnomusicologists, music pedagogues, music theorists, and scientists and experts in related fields dedicated to researching music phenomena in society.
This year, the Symposium was not stopped by a pandemic, so it is being held for the first time in the form of a video conference. In this way, 59 participants from ten countries will meet in virtual Sarajevo, in four symposium programs.
The activities of the Symposium will begin with the opening ceremony on Thursday, 10 December 2020 at 10:00, at which the participants will be addressed by the President of the Musicological Society of the Federation of BiH, Dr. Amila Ramović, Dean of the Music Academy of the University of Sarajevo, M.Sc. Ališer Sijarić, and the Vice-Rector for Arts of the University of Sarajevo Dr. Tamara Karača Villach.
The central program consists of working sessions that will present new scientific knowledge from various domains of music science and related disciplines on 10, 11 and 12 December. A special session will be dedicated to aspects of musical life in the age and marked by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program also includes two plenary lectures, the program of the Symposium includes two thematic meetings dedicated to personalities of historical significance for music in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the finals of the Symposium will be marked by a gathering on the occasion of the death of Dr. Zija Kučukalić, a capital figure for the development of musicology in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially the Music Academy of the University of Sarajevo.
