Awarding Ceremony for Scientific and Artistic Achievements for 2023 Held
143 members of the academic and research staff from the University of Sarajevo awarded
The award ceremony for scientific and artistic contributions for the year 2023 took place at the University of Sarajevo Rectorate on Tuesday, 28 January 2025.
In accordance with the Regulation on the Awarding of Academic and Research Staff at the University of Sarajevo, based on the results of scientific and artistic work, 143 members from 25 UNSA Faculties were recognized for their achievements in 2023.
Ten awards were bestowed for artistic work and research in the humanities of national significance, with a total of 11 recipients. This included four awards for long-standing contributions, five awards for contributions to the arts, specifically in national humanities in 2023, and one award for a monograph of particular scientific and national importance in 2023.
In 2024, an initiative recognizing doctoral candidates at the University of Sarajevo was implemented, aimed at acknowledging and rewarding the scientific achievements of third-cycle students, resulting in the rector's acknowledgment of eight doctoral candidates for their research efforts in 2023.
UNSA Rector, Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, emphasized that today's award ceremony signifies not only the advancement of our institution but also the increasing recognition of the exceptional accomplishments of our professors and researchers. “We take great pride in the continuous growth of awarded authors, which is a clear indicator of the progress in the quality of scientific and artistic work at the University of Sarajevo,” stated Rector Zaimović.
He reflected on the journey the University of Sarajevo has undertaken since 2017, when the initiative to reward academic and research staff began, pointing out the evident stimulating impact of valuing scientific and artistic contributions in accordance with the Regulations and the steady increase in the number of awardees.
“Your dedication, research spirit, and creativity not only strengthen our academic community but also form the foundation for the development of society as a whole. It gives me particular pleasure to highlight that results and contributions are visible not only in the realm of science but also in artistic and artistic-research endeavors, as well as in the humanities,” remarked Rector Zaimović to the award recipients, extending his congratulations on their outstanding achievements. “You are part of the positive trend of increased scientific production at the University of Sarajevo, and your accomplishments serve as an inspiration for us all, reminding us of the importance of our researchers engaging on the international scientific stage by publishing in renowned scientific journals, thereby promoting our country and our University. May these awards encourage you to continue your exploration and progress in your fruitful academic and research careers,” concluded Rector Zaimović.
Prof. Dr. Adna Mesihović, Minister of Science, Higher Education, and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton, emphasized in her address that today's ceremony serves as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of investing in science, education, and innovation—as these are the very drivers that lead us toward a sustainable and prosperous future.
“The Ministry of Science, Higher Education, and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton, as am I personally, is fully committed to promoting and supporting excellence, as well as advancing the educational and scientific system,” noted Minister Mesihović, adding: “Today, those of you who are award recipients represent a beacon of hope for the future, in which bridges will be built between theory and practice, past and future, science and industry, and between policies and institutions that should be your allies on the path to progress. Your dedication, innovation, and ability to navigate the challenges of today's world will shape a society based on knowledge, science, ethics, and vision.” Additionally, Minister Mesihović expressed gratitude to the University of Sarajevo for its role in fostering a better, knowledge-driven society.
The awards were presented by Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, alongside Vice-Rector for Research, Prof. Dr. Naris Pojskić, Scientific Advisor. The event was attended by Nihad Uk, Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Prof. Dr. Adna Mesihović, Minister of Science, Higher Education and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton, members of the University’s Administrative Board and Council for Science and Art, as well as heads and representatives of the University member institutions.
On behalf of the award recipients, Prof. Dr. Amra Čaušević remarked that today is an exceptionally significant day for the awardees. “This event is not only an opportunity to celebrate our achievements but also a moment to remember all the moments, efforts, and dedication we invested to reach this point,” stated Prof. Dr. Amra Čaušević, adding: “This award is not only an individual honor but a reflection of the collective effort of all of us who are part of this great academic family. This success is the result of collaborative work, mutual support, and the selfless exchange of knowledge and experiences. Each award we received today is well-deserved and comes as a result of persistent work and great love for what we do.”
Professor Mr. Asim Đelilović, representing the recipients of special awards for artistic work and work in disciplines of particular national significance, expressed gratitude to the bodies of the University of Sarajevo for recognizing not just scientific research but also endeavors in the fields of art and the humanities, which hold exceptional importance for the culture and society of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He expressed particular satisfaction at the large number of young researchers who are laureates of these awards, who, as he stated, will contribute to the more substantive development of our cultural, artistic, and scientific community and Bosnian society.
