International ICGEB Workshop Applied Biotechnology Agenda for 2030 Held
The international ICGEB workshop Applied Biotechnology Agenda for 2030 was held from 4-7 October in Sarajevo, organized by the University of Sarajevo - Institute for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. The event brought together 75 participants, young and experienced scientists from Egypt, Malaysia, India, Mexico, Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Italy, Germany, Sweden, USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Recognized experts from the academic sector, economy/entrepreneurship, governmental structures, and local and international non-governmental sector and organizations for technical and scientific cooperation (UNDP and ICGEB) participated as lecturers at the Workshop.
In more than 12 hours of theoretical and 10 hours of practical work, the participants were educated about the most current topics of modern biotechnology and its application for the purposes of Sustainable Development and the Green Plan in solving the problems of availability and safety of food, medicines, energy crisis and global warming. On concrete examples of scientific research presented by experts from the country and abroad and the application of scientific knowledge in agriculture, medicine and biosecurity regulations, and other spheres of society.
During the three-and-a-half-day workshop, young researchers and experts had the opportunity to develop concrete practical skills in gene editing techniques, gene activity analysis responsible for optimal production in agriculture, and molecular interaction analysis techniques in the development of new drugs, as well as biosecurity risk analysis methodology.
Support for the organization of the Workshop was provided by the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) from Trieste, the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of Sarajevo Canton, the American Embassy in BiH and the Association of Geneticists in BiH (GENUBIH).
