The Institute of History at the University of Sarajevo’s the 65th Anniversary Commemoration

The Institute of History at the University of Sarajevo commemorated its 65th anniversary with a formal gathering of current and retired employees, associates, friends, and guests. The event celebrated decades of dedicated research and contributions to the study of the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

University of Sarajevo Rector, Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, emphasized the importance of the Institute for the academic and broader community. He stated, “It is superfluous to emphasize the importance of our institutes for the contribution they make to the humanities. Among them is the Institute of History, which has achieved excellent results. It is our obligation to work to ensure a peaceful and stable space for all research associates of the Institute for unhindered work, and I only ask you to continue working as you have done so far.”

Institute of History Director, Dr. Sedad Bešlija, expressed gratitude for the support of those who have contributed to the Institute's development over the years. He highlighted the Institute's historical role in preserving the memory of the anti-fascist struggle, affirming the identity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and defending the country's independence. He also acknowledged the challenges faced and overcome in maintaining the Institute's status and integrating it within the University of Sarajevo.

Dr. Bešlija stated, “We are proud to emphasize the fact that we are the leading institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina that deals with historical science, we currently have 16 doctors of historical sciences and 3 masters of history who will soon be doctors, and 7 employees in administration who monitor and service the work of the scientific sector. Our results are public, visible and undeniable. Thanks to them, we have also received public recognition. We continue to fulfill the mission, vision and goals that have remained the same for 65 years. Affirmation of the humanities, humanistic values, study of our past and critical historiography. All this would not be possible without you, associates and friends of the Institute who have been and remain with us all these past years with your work, dedication and desire for the Institute to be successful. Thank you very much!”

Attendees had the opportunity to network and exchange ideas, emphasizing the importance of academic and friendly cooperation. The Institute provided a catalog of publications and a presentation on the results of their work in 2024. The celebration symbolized continuity and commitment to preserving and researching Bosnia and Herzegovina's historical heritage.
