Government of Sarajevo Canton Supports Establishment of the University "Supercomputer" – the First in BiH

The Government of Sarajevo Canton, upon the proposal of the Ministry of Science, Higher Education, and Youth of KS, has given its approval to the University of Sarajevo for the establishment and construction of a University Scientific-Research High-Performance Computing (HPC) system, popularly known as a "Supercomputer." A working group has also been appointed to realize this strategic project.
The High-Performance Computing (HPC) system uses advanced computing technologies to solve complex problems across a wide range of scientific and research fields. Its application is crucial in scientific research, weather forecasting, computational biology and bioinformatics, aerospace engineering, artificial intelligence development, biomedical simulations, financial modeling and forecasting, genome research, general engineering, advanced data analysis, and many other areas.
This project holds strategic significance for the entire Sarajevo Canton. The planned partnership with the IT sector in Sarajevo Canton will ensure full utilization of the HPC system's processing capacities and establish a direct link between the public and private sectors. Additionally, the capacities of the HPC system will be accessible to colleagues from other universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, making the University of Sarajevo a center of research activities in BiH.
The main goals of the project are to strengthen the scientific research capacities of the University and promote the development of an innovation ecosystem in Sarajevo Canton.
The University of Sarajevo approached this project in cooperation with the University of Maribor based on a signed Memorandum of Understanding. Initial funds for starting procedures and the first phase of the project have been secured from the University's own revenues, while the estimated costs for establishing and constructing the first University HPC system in BiH are approximately five million euros.
