Genomic editing experiment of non-pathogenic E. coli strain with CRISPR-Cas9 technology successfully performed at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology UNSA

Na Institutu za genetičko inženjerstvo i biotehnologiju UNSA uspješno izveden eksperiment genomskog editovanja nepatogenog soja E. coli CRISPR-Cas9 tehnologijom

In April this year, for the first time in BiH, at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Sarajevo, an experiment of genomic editing of non-pathogenic E. coli strain with CRISPR-Cas9 technology was successfully performed.

The team led by Prof. Dr. Lejla Pojskić modified the DH5-α strain of E.coli by genetic bacterial transformation using the CRISPR-Cas9 technique. Newly transformed bacterial cells carry an altered and stably incorporated marker gene for streptomycin resistance.

The premiere application of the CRISPR-Cas9 genetic engineering technique at INGEB opened new opportunities for the development of research and educational capacities in the field of molecular and applied genetics as important components of the development of the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and the University of Sarajevo. The Open Biotech Platform project is being implemented thanks to the support of the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of KS.
