A five-week pilot training of teachers and librarians of the Hasan Kikić Elementary School in Sarajevo was realized
The project team of the Institute for Social Research at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Sarajevo, realized a five-week pilot training of teachers and librarians of the Hasan Kikić Elementary School in Sarajevo in media and information literacy in the first semester of the 2020/2021 year.
The purpose of the pilot workshops was to acquaint teachers and librarians with the UNESCO concept of media and information literacy (MIP), to discuss with them the possibilities of applying the concept in schools, and to motivate them to apply a certain part of the MIP curriculum for teaching staff adapted to Bosnia and Herzegovina through work with students.
The preparation of the workshops included the creation of materials for teachers in various symbolic forms (written, visual, audio-video produced, etc.), thus providing numerous resources for teachers and librarians that can serve as a basis for applying the MIP curriculum.
Given that the workshops were not focused on prescriptive approaches, through which teachers and librarians would be provided with content that they only reproduce in working with students, and that we view media and information literacy as cross-curricular competence, the workshops were focused on to reflect and discuss a change in the educational paradigm that puts the student first, not the content, and which, by combining the content of media and information literacy and innovative methods of guided inquiry design (GID) encourages creativity, innovation and learning through the research process in students.
The realized pilot workshops are a continuation of the four-year efforts of the Institute for Social Research of the Faculty of Political Sciences to develop and integrate media and information literacy in a feasible and sustainable way into the system of formal education, but also society in general. In this regard, an optimal model of integration has been designed - a hybrid model of multi-component integration of media and information literacy in the education system. The essence of this model is the library as an information center, which can be a strategic resource through which the process of information and media literacy of users (students, teachers, parents).
Pilot workshops on media and information literacy were realized within the Joint Regional Program “Dialogue for the Future”, which is implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia by UNESCO, UNICEF and UNDP.
