The University integration, amendments to the Sarajevo Canton Law on Higher Education and transition to treasury were subject of discussion between Elmedin Konaković, Sarajevo Canton Assembly Chairman, Vice-Presidents Smiljana Viteškić, Danijela Kristić and Vibor Handžić, and Zineta Bogunić, Minister of Education, Science and Youth KS, with University of Sarajevo Rector, Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj and Vice-Rectors: Prof. Drs. Aida Hodžić, Dženana Husremović, Prof. Sanja Burić and Prof. Dr. Elvir Čizmić.
“The integration process we are implementing is the most important reform program in the modern history of our university, and this is the way in which our academic community will persevere, aware of its importance, despite the challenges we face every day,” said Rector Škrijelj. He also pointed to the provisions of the Law on Higher Education that directly restrict the autonomy of the University of Sarajevo, as well as the provisions for which implementation unrealistic deadlines are foreseen, and the need for amendments to the Law by urgent procedure.
Assembly Speaker Konaković stated that the founders' commitment was to establish an integrated University, and that, in this sense, the management of the university has the full support of the founders. He also expressed the opinion that the University of Sarajevo will have a partner in this convening of the Assembly and the Government in relation to the need to make corrections to the Law on Higher Education.
Emphasizing the importance of the academic community, the newly appointed Minister of Education, Science and Youth KS Zineta Bogunić pointed to some degree of marginalization of academic community and science, and confirmed the commitment of the Ministry to the reform processes.
It was pointed out that the university is a support for the development of society and the state, and talks were held on the need for a significant investment in higher education and science.
