University of Sarajevo hosts PhD student Anna Ivanova as part of EUPeace Doctoral Mobility Program
On 12 March 2026, the University of Sarajevo hosted a reception for Anna Ivanova, a PhD student from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen, who is at the University of Sarajevo as part of the EUPeace Doctoral Mobility Program.
The reception was attended by Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Kemal Durić, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, and professors from the Faculty of Political Sciences: Prof. Dr. Ehlimana Spahić, Team Leader for the Implementation of Work Package 6 (WP6) – Research Hubs and Doctoral Studies within the EUPeace Alliance, and Prof. Dr. Sarina Bakić, Academic Coordinator of PhD student Ivanova.
The Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, expressed his pleasure that the University of Sarajevo has the opportunity to host the second doctoral student who is staying at this institution within the EUPeace doctoral mobility program, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and academic exchange in higher education.
They discussed the activities planned within the three-month mobility of Anna Ivanova. Her research focuses on the politics of remembrance of the war in Ukraine, especially on their implementation in urban spaces and the social consequences of this process for Ukrainian society. During her stay in Sarajevo and mobility at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo, the doctoral student plans to participate in the exchange of knowledge and closely cooperate with local historians, sociologists and political scientists who deal with this topic. "This cooperation will directly contribute to the completion of one of the chapters of my dissertation, which analyzes Ukrainian politics of remembrance in the global context of post-socialist transformations," stated doctoral student Ivanova.
Anna Ivanova comes from Kharkiv, Ukraine, and during the conversation, strong parallels were highlighted between the experiences of Kharkiv and Sarajevo, especially in the context of reflecting on war legacies, collective memory and post-conflict reconstruction of society.
The mobility takes place within the framework of the EUPeace Research Hub Security and Conflict Transformation. The collaboration with regional experts on post-socialist and post-war transitions aims to enrich doctoral research and foster cooperation between the Justus Liebig University and the University of Sarajevo.
The EUPeace Doctoral Mobility Grants programme was established with the aim of facilitating the implementation and development of sustainability and capacity building of Research Hubs. Doctoral mobility grants promote cooperation and mobility, and encourage academic exchange between Research Hubs and doctoral candidates. These doctoral grants enable doctoral candidates to conduct research stays at partner universities, thereby fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange within the EUPeace alliance.
EUPeace – European University for Peace, Justice, and Inclusive Societies – brings together nine member universities, which have focused their strategic international goals in teaching, research, and management in higher education on promoting a peaceful, just, and inclusive European society.
