UNSA Faculty of Veterinary Medicine successfully implemented a scientific research project entitled “The Impact of Virtual Educational Tools on Students’ Visual-Spatial Ability”

Veterinarski fakultet UNSA uspješno realizovao naučnoistraživački projekat pod nazivom “Uticaj virtuelnih obrazovnih alata na vizuelno-spacijalnu sposobnost studenata”

The University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine successfully implemented a scientific research project entitled “The Impact of Virtual Educational Tools on Students’ Visual-Spatial Ability”, co-financed by the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton (Contract No.: 27-02-35-35137-14/22 dated 28/09/2022) in the amount of 33,300.00 BAM.

The project was aimed at developing innovative approaches in the education of future doctors of veterinary medicine, with the key activity including 3D scanning of anatomical specimens from the collection of the Anatomical Museum of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Sarajevo. Based on this, a profile of the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was established on the Sketchfab platform, the world's largest 3D model database. Currently, the profile contains more than 200 models, which significantly facilitates students' understanding of the complex three-dimensional morphology of various organs.

The exceptional value of the project is the fact that its results are available not only to students of our Faculty and University, but also to the wider international community. In this way, the visibility of our activities is significantly increased and the reputation of our institutions is strengthened. Currently, the profile has more than 70,000 views.

The scientific goal of the project was to identify the effects of using virtual educational tools on the development of students' visual-spatial abilities, as a fundamental ability in several medical disciplines. The expected contribution of the project in this domain is reflected in the acquisition of scientifically relevant data on the educational effects of using innovative approaches in teaching veterinary medicine. After conducting research, it was determined that students achieve better results using virtual content.

The results of the above research were published in the form of a scientific article "Enhancing student performance with multicolored 3D printed neuroanatomical models in veterinary education" published in the prestigious journal BMC Medical Education 25, 1323, 2025 (Web of Science Q1, IF 3.2). The work was created as a result of multidisciplinary cooperation between professors from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Sarajevo, as well as international cooperation with a colleague from the University of Istanbul-Cerrahpasa.

The University of Sarajevo - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine hereby expresses its sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton for the support and successful cooperation in the implementation of this important scientific research project.
