“Sarajevo corpus of SMS messages in the Bosnian language” Promoted
The University of Sarajevo, the Faculty of Philosophy and the Center for Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian Language at the Faculty of Philosophy organized the promotion of the Sarajevo corpus of SMS messages in the Bosnian language. The event took place on 22 May 2024 in the UNSA Rectorate Ceremonial Hall.
The reviewers: Dr. Ismail Palić, full professor at the University of Sarajevo, and Dr. Mija Michelizza, research associate at the Institute for the Slovenian Language “Fran Ramovš,” Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Ljubljana, and expert consultant Dr. Philipp Wasserscheidt, professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin spoke about the Sarajevo SMS message corpus. The visitors were also addressed by Prof. Dr. Dženana Husremović, vice-rector for teaching and student affairs at the University of Sarajevo, and authors of the Sarajevo corpus.
The Sarajevo corpus of SMS messages in the Bosnian language is a project of the Center for Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian Languages of the University of Sarajevo - Faculty of Philosophy. The authors of the Corpus are Prof. Dr. Halid Bulić (project manager), assistant professor Dr. Elma Durmišević, assistant professor Dr. Azra Hodžić-Čavkić, Prof.Dr. Enisa Bajraktarević, Azra Ahmetspahić-Peljto, MA and Belmin Šabić, MA. Work on the Corps lasted from January 2021 to July 2023. The Sarajevo corpus contains 10,000 authentic SMS messages in the Bosnian language that are now available to the scientific community for researching linguistic phenomena in SMS messages and for testing various hypotheses concerning this form of communication.
The Sarajevo corpus of SMS messages in the Bosnian was originally published as an electronic book in 2023, and then the data from it was digitized, adapted to modern concordancers and search tools and uploaded as an electronic corpus to the repository CLARIN.SI (Slovene Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) in 2024.
At the 35th Sarajevo International Book Fair in April 2024, the Sarajevo corpus of SMS messages in the Bosnian language was awarded with the Award for e-publishing and new technologies.
