“Copyrights and intellectual property in e-environment” Round Table Discussion Held

The “Copyrights and intellectual property in the e-environment” round table was held on in the UNSA Rectorate 5 December 2017. The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, Rector who highlighted the importance of holding such meetings, so the profession would be consulted and opinions and views of the wider academic community heard when it comes to copyright and intellectual property rights issues.
“The information technologies development making information and knowledge available to everyone rapidly increased the possibilities of appropriating others people's results and achievements in science. Today, even the most developed countries, despite detailed regulation and the enormous efforts invested in this field, are not completely immune to the plagiarism. The University of Sarajevo has undertaken significant actions concerning the copyrights protection and the prevention of plagiarism in scientific work. It is futile to mention the fact that without suppressing these phenomena we cannot count on the development of high quality science at our Faculties that should be to all of us the ultimate starting point” said Rector Škrijelj.

Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Nikolić, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation spoke on the topic “Strengthening the role of students in building a corporate culture of quality at universities - Is this the way to a sustainable way of preventing plagiarism?” In her presentation, Prof. Nikolić emphasized that discussion on academic integrity was crucial element and that this discussion should be part of everyday life at the University.

When speaking on the topic Preventing Plagiarism at the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Senada Dizdar, Faculty of Philosophy presented the concept of information literacy, and its connection with modern education principles, placing it within the "21st Century’s Literacy.” She also presented the activities of the University of Sarajevo to prevent plagiarism through the organization of the round table, the preparation of the ORTEZ pilot project and the rollouts of the project Quality Assurance for Scientific Research Work through the Prevention of Plagiarism - Citation and Copyright.

Doz. Dr. Iza Razija Mešević, Faculty of Law talked about the topic of Legal Framework for the Prevention of Plagiarism. In her presentation, she addressed the relevant provisions of the Copyright and Related Rights Act which should be familiar to students of the first, second and third cycle of studies, as well as academic staff of the University, to prevent plagiarism and raise awareness of copyright in the academic community.

The ORTEZ project was presented by Doz. Dr. Dušanka Bošković, Faculty of Electrical Engineering. She pointed out that the University repository of scientific and educational digital content databases is accompanied by a set of storing, searching and distributing services.

Within the round table, Prof. Dr. Senada Kalabušić, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Doz. Dr. Elmedin Selmanović, UTIC director presented software for detection of plagiarism and the way of its use, as well as its application at the University of Sarajevo.

The aim of the round table was to present the previous activities on the prevention of plagiarism that University of Sarajevo implemented in the previous period.
