Doktor Karel Bayer Book by Valerijan Žujo Presented
A book Doktor Karel Bayer by Valerijan Žujo was presented on Thursday, 23 January 2020 at the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The promoters spoke about the life, work, and contribution of Dr. Bayer to the development of modern Bosnian medicine at that time.
Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Ismet Ovčina, pointed out that this is an exclusive edition published in the National and University Library of BiH’s Memoria Bosniaca edition which mostly contains unpublished data, documents and photos. Praised and celebrated during his lifetime, Dr. Karel Bayer was completely forgotten after his death, so that in a period longer than a century, only one short article in the Medical Archives (1978) was published, including some inaccurate information in that brief article.
Promoter and reviewer, Prof. Dr. Faruk Dalagija spoke about the importance of the book on Dr. Karel Bayer and the Vakuf Hospital, and on the collaboration with the author.
Promoter and reviewer, Prof. Dr. Srebren Dizdar recalled the importance of exploring the cultural past, which is important in understanding the present, and calls for its active interpretation and reinterpretation.
The promoter, Dr. Muhammad Nametak, spoke about the activities and development efforts invested by Dr. Karel during the Austro-Hungarian period of our past.
Author Valerijan Žujo introduced the research to the archives and libraries in Prague, the Bayer’s hometown of Hradec Kralove, Vienna, Belgrade, and all relevant Sarajevo archives, libraries and museums with attendees. He was guided by the principle that, if possible, every reference in the literature should be checked at source.
