A rich program to mark the National Day of Awareness of Libraries in BiH
National Library Awareness Day has been celebrated in BiH for the fourth year in a row and has seen a significant increase in public interest. The goal of the National Day is to remind citizens of the importance of library participation in building a knowledge society. Our project partners, the University of Mostar and the Cantonal and University Library in Bihać will also contribute to this event with their partner libraries.
National Library Awareness Day in BiH is the result of a three-year ERASMUS + Capacity Building project Networked Library - Support Services: Modernizing Libraries in the Western Balkans through Staff Development and Library Service Reform. The main coordinator of the project was the Institute of Technology from Ireland.
On 30 October 2020, partner libraries (national, school, public, higher education, special libraries) will mark the National Day through the organization of various activities (lectures, seminars, exhibitions, etc.). The University of Sarajevo involved more than 40 partner libraries from BiH in this event, which will offer various contents to their user communities on October 30. More than 50 programs have been registered to be held in various locations, both online and in the physical space, following the instructions of the Crisis Staffs in charge of the epidemiological situation.
This year's motto is Library without walls, and the focus is on students from the first to the fourth grade of primary school, the youngest users of libraries. Why a Library Without Walls? In modern librarianship, the term library without walls is common because it implies that the library does not consist of buildings and books, but a librarian. A librarian is a person who finds information for a user and gives it to him to use regardless of space and property. This notion of librarians fits into the current social situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The librarian is equally present in both the physical and the virtual space. The librarian is where his user is, in online classes, on social networks, etc. National Day is a great opportunity for librarians to show how and in what way they adapted their library and information services during the pandemic.
The central activity of the National Day of Awareness of Libraries of the University of Sarajevo will be realized through several activities. The first activity is the awarding of prizes to students of the first and second grades of primary schools as a result of the art competition My Librarian and will be held on 30 October 2020 in the University of Sarajevo Rectorate. This event will send a message to the public expressed in the words of one of the winners of this art competition “The library is my colorful world”. Another activity is the organization of webinars on the use of EBSCO databases to which the University has access. Let's not forget online reading for students from the first to the fourth grade of primary school, which aim to promote reading from the earliest age and remind of the importance of librarians' participation in primary education. Our readers are students of the Department of Comparative Literature and Information Sciences, and as literature they read literature of their choice from the curriculum. From the activities of the University of Sarajevo, we single out a series of mini COVID-19 stories of librarians who talk about the experience of working with users during a pandemic.
Among the program activities of our partner libraries, we single out: the traditional exhibition of the National and University Library of BiH, the workshop "Hand as the central lexeme of human life" of the Library of the Fourth Gymnasium Ilidža, the program of the Sarajevo Library of the Imagination Box - video story for children
