UNSA Faculty of Medicine hosts an international symposium dedicated to dementia, its prevention and support for dementia sufferers | ADawarE project

On 11 June  2026, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo hosted an international symposium within the ADawarE project dedicated to dementia, its prevention and support for dementia patients.

 

Sarajevo, together with the head of the project for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Dr. . Asija Začiragić, a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo, gathered leading experts in dementia. Experts from Austria, Greece, Norway and Croatia spoke about prevention, education and new approaches to support people with dementia,

 

The lectures were held at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo, and were held by Prof. Dr. . Stefanie Auer from the University of Lifelong Education in Krems (Austria), one of the leading European experts in research and care of people with dementia, Dr. Marianna Tsatali from the Greek Alzheimer Association, Professor Ingelin Testad from the University of Exeter and the Center for Aging Medicine SESAM from Norway, and Anne Torsvik Henriksen, an expert in the inclusion of people with dementia in research and social life, Professor Ninoslav Mimica, one of the leading regional experts in Alzheimer's disease and psychogeriatrics and Sandra Kerovec, an educational rehabilitator who promotes creative and inclusive approaches to support people with dementia.

 

Lecture topics included raising awareness about dementia in European countries, preventive programs, non-pharmacological interventions, inclusion of people with dementia in research and the community, and innovative models of communication about dementia.

 

Dementia is one of the biggest public health challenges today, and the ADawarE project aims to improve education, strengthen international cooperation and develop new approaches that contribute to a better understanding of the needs of people living with dementia and their families.

 

The symposium is intended for students, specialists and doctors of the University of Sarajevo, and by organizing this event, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo has once again confirmed its active role in international scientific research projects and the promotion of modern health policies.

 

The “ADawarE” project is being implemented thanks to the engagement of the Dean, Prof. Dr. Amina Valjevac, and the international expertise of Prof. Dr. Asija Začiragić in the field of dementia.
