Today, the Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo (SPUS) held a presentation of the “Lives are not numbers” project and presented the results of a survey called “The driver as a factor in traffic safety”, on the occasion of commemorating the Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims.

Aware of the fact that many people, including students, are injured (mildly or seriously) or lose their lives in traffic, the Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo, as the highest student body, feels the duty and responsibility to commemorate the Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims and thus give contribution and appeal to the solution of traffic safety problems.

The survey was presented by students - members of the Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo and the Student Association of the Faculty of Traffic and Communications “Feniks” in cooperation with the Association for Promotion and Traffic Safety “Every life counts”.

The President of the Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo, Imran Pašalić, a student of the Faculty of Political Sciences of UNSA, emphasized that this project was initiated to show that students can have creative ideas and solutions for a problem in which students are the most affected. “We are witnesses of unpleasant scenes where some of the students were killed on the roads of Bosnia and Herzegovina, most often in Sarajevo, due to reckless driving. With this gesture, we want to present this project on the day when we honor the victims. The goal is to raise awareness of traffic culture, which we really lack, and to raise students' awareness of this culture. After we exchange experiences from our own ranks, then we can act outwardly and ask the official institutions for some regulations that we can also offer, and thus we can create a safer environment where we will never have to gather to pay tribute to the victims of irresponsible driving”, said Imran Pašalić .

Mr. Aladin Žunić, president of the Association for the Promotion of Traffic Safety “Every life counts”, said that in 85% of cases, man is the cause of traffic accidents, and that traffic culture is at a very low level. “What we as an association continuously do is to raise awareness about traffic safety, with a focus on young drivers”, stated Mr. Žunić, and pointed out that in the past year 2022, 222 lives were lost on our roads, stressing that this project should to show that it is not the numbers, but the persons who perished.

Almedina Ćehić, president of the student association of the Faculty of Traffic and Communications “Feniks” of the University of Sarajevo, spoke about the conducted survey entitled “The driver as a factor in traffic safety”. “400 students from different faculties participated in the survey. We are not satisfied with the results that indicate that a small level of students know what traffic culture is. Quite a few students participated in workshops and seminars on the topic of traffic safety. We believe that this must change, and that's why we came up with the idea of starting a project like this. We will launch presentations at all faculties of the University of Sarajevo in order to educate our students”, said Almedina Ćehić

The message the students sent from today's event is clear: they don't want to lay flowers, they want to live safely!
