Final Conference of the Interreg “Danube Water Balance” Project Held in Belgrade
The final conference and project partners’ meeting of the international project “Danube Water Balance – Development of a Harmonized Water Balance Modeling System for the Danube River Basin” took place in Belgrade on 22 and 23 September 2026. The project is implemented under the Interreg Danube Region Program, with co-funding from the European Union.
The two-day event brought together representatives of project partners, institutions responsible for water management, research and academic institutions, and other relevant stakeholders from countries in the Danube River Basin. The final conference was hosted by the public water management company Srbijavode, with part of the program held at Expo Playground in Belgrade.
The conference presented the project’s key results, including the development of a harmonized data repository, a joint data management strategy, a water balance model for the Danube River Basin, and the DWB Web-GIS tool for visualizing and analyzing results. Particular attention was given to the impact of climate change on the water balance and analyses of future climate scenarios in the pilot sub-basins of the Morava, Tisza, Upper Sava, and Drina rivers, as well as opportunities for the further development and application of the project’s results.
The University of Sarajevo, one of the project partners, was represented at the final conference by Prof. Dr. Emina Hadžić, the project lead for UNSA, Prof. Dr. Suada Sulejmanović, and Adela Nurković-Kulenović, MA, from the University of Sarajevo’s Center for Research and Development.
The University of Sarajevo’s participation in the Danube Water Balance project contributes to stronger international research cooperation, the development of scientific and professional capacities, and closer ties with institutions across the Danube Region. The project’s results provide an important foundation for improving water resource management, exchanging and harmonizing data, and planning climate change adaptation across transboundary river basins.
