The Research Study “POLITICS OF REVISIONISM: Denial of Crimes and Genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992–2025” Promotion

A promotion of the new edition of the Institute for the Investigation of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law, University of Sarajevo— a research study “POLITICS OF REVISIONISM: Denial of Crimes and Genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1992–2025 (A Research Study) was took place at the University of Sarajevo Rectorate’s Ceremonial Hall on 19 May  2025”

The authors of the study are Dr. Jasmin Medić, Dr. Hikmet Karčić, Dr. Muamer Džananović, and Dr. Elvedin Mulagić. Through this publication, they provided a thorough analysis of decades-long and systematic denial of war crimes and genocide committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The focus of the study is on the legal, social, and political aspects of this phenomenon, along with concrete proposals for measures to combat it.

Numerous guests from the academic community, civil society, and political life attended the promotion. Notably, the presence of the Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, the Vice-Rectors, members of the University Senate, and a large number of students, which affirms the institutional support and the importance given to the work of the Institute.

The introductory address was delivered by the Institute’s director, Dr. Muamer Džananović, who spoke on behalf of the publisher and as one of the co-authors of the study. In his speech, he emphasized that this publication was created out of the need to respond to increasingly sophisticated, organized, and politically motivated attempts to deny genocide, relativize war crimes, and distort historical facts.

Dr. Omer Osmanović, Minister for Veteran Affairs of the Sarajevo Canton, highlighted the importance of such publications for preserving historical memory and fighting denialism. The Ministry he leads supported the printing of this significant study.

In the statements of other authors, particular emphasis was placed on the importance of support for such projects and continuous scientific research, especially in a global context.

Speakers at the event included Dr. Zilha Mastalić Košuta, Dr. Merisa Karović-Babić, Prof. Dr. Amer Osmić, and Mr. Sc. Melina Borčak. They underscored that this is an extremely important study that provides a reasoned and documented analysis of contemporary phenomena of denialism and revisionism, and constitutes a significant contribution both to the academic community and to the struggle for truth and justice. Special attention was given to the recommendations outlined by the authors in the concluding parts of the publication. The event moderator was Elvira Aganović.

The promotion was held as part of the commemoration of the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, adopted in 2024.
