Public lecture "Is the Balkans still the Other in Europe?" | Professor Maria Todorova
We are delighted to announce public lecture titled "Is the Balkans still the Other in Europe?", presented by the esteemed Professor Maria Todorova. The event will be held at the Faculty of Political Sciences on Friday, the 7th of July, at 4 pm.
Professor Todorova, Gutgsell Professor of History Emerita at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is renowned for her comprehensive knowledge and extensive research on the Balkans. Her influential books, including "Imagining the Balkans", "Bones of Contention: The Living Archive of Vasil Levski and the Making of Bulgaria's National Hero", and "The Lost World of Socialists at Europe's Margins: Imagining Utopia" among others, have been translated into 15 languages, demonstrating her global reach.
Out conversation with professor Todorova will also address the self-colonial perception of the Balkans, where there's an increasing trend of viewing the Balkans from within and without in the same light - characterized by backwardness, hatred, and so on. Professor Todorova will also dissect the degree to which such rhetoric of essentializing the Balkans contributes to undemocratic, illiberal regimes and ethno-politics.
Additionally, in the context of new geopolitical circumstances the discussion will touch upon the liminality of the Balkans.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Bookstan and Buybook for their support in making this event happen.
Join us in what promises to be a thought-provoking lecture that explores the intricate dynamics of the Balkans within the European context. The lecture will take place at the Faculty of Political Sciences on the 7th of July at 16:00.
