50th Anniversary of the Language Institute, University of Sarajevo: Scientific Conference "Development of Linguistic Bosnian Studies"
The opening ceremony of the scientific conference "Development of Linguistic Bosnian Studies", organized on the occasion of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Language Institute, University of Sarajevo, and the awarding of plaques to individuals who contributed to the institutional development of linguistic science in BiH, was held on 2 March 2022 at the University of Sarajevo.
The ceremony was opened with welcome speeches by Prof. Dr. Rifat Škrijelj, Rector, Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Nikolić, Minister of Science, Higher Education and Youth of Sarajevo Canton, Professor Naida Hota Muminović, Minister of Education of Sarajevo Canton and others. Jasmin Hodžić, director of the Institute of Language of the University of Sarajevo.
UNSA Language Institute Director, Dr. Jasmin Hodžić pointed out that this year the Institute marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous linguist Herta Kuna, who founded the Department of Language History at the Faculty of Philosophy, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ismet Smajlović, the 90th anniversary of Alija Isaković’s birth and the 30th anniversary of his 1992 dictionary.
“Today's conference will be dedicated to the institutional approach to language science in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where in addition to the activities of the institute will include its establishment, political circumstances, program work, and will talk about the Academy of Sciences, linguistic societies in the country, they are studying languages“ stated the director Hodžić.
Introductory speech on the topic of institutional approach to language and language science was given by Dr. Josip Baotić, one of the first employees of the Language Institute and director from 1984 to 1991.
As part of the ceremony, plaques were awarded to individuals who contributed to the institutional development of linguistics in BiH. The winners of the plaque are: posthumously Milan Šipka (1973-1984 director), Josip Baotić (1984-1991 director), Naila Valjevac (1991-1992 director), Mevlida Karadža-Garić (1993-1996 acting director), Hanka Vajzović (1996-1997 acting director), posthumously Ibrahim Čedić (1997-2013 director), Alen Kalajdžija (2013-2021 director).
After the ceremonial part of the program, a working part of the conference followed, which began with plenary presentations by Dr. Senahid Halilović "Results of linguistic research in the field of Bosnian dialectology" and Dr. Dževad Jahić "Current Standardization Issues in the Bosnian Language".
The conference continues on March 3 and 4 according to the program.
