A scientific monograph entitled Law, State and Religion in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been published by Routledge these days. This book explores the dynamics of the relationship between law, state and religion in post-communist and post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina to provide answers to the following key questions: What are the new legal solutions that have enabled both states and religious communities to adapt to liberal democratic standards of religious freedom? Are the approaches of the legislature and the courts in defining the relationship between the state and religion closer to the principle of strict neutrality of the state or, alternatively, do they provide more space for cooperation between the state and religion? And, what are the main unresolved issues concerning the protection of religious freedoms and the consolidation of relations between the state and the main religious communities in the country?
Structurally, the book consists of an introduction, two parts (with a total of nine chapters), a conclusion, a bibliography and an index of terms. At the beginning of the book, abbreviations, a list of primary and secondary legislation and a list of court cases of domestic and international courts that appear as references in the text are highlighted.
Nedim Begović, co-author of the book, is an associate professor and Vice Dean for Quality at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences, University of Sarajevo, where he teaches courses on religion and law, Islamic law and research methodology in undergraduate, master's and doctoral studies. As a participant in the Fulbright Scholarship Program the U. S. Department of State attended the 2011/12 academic year. as a visiting researcher at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, USA, where he conducted research on religious freedom in the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
Emir Kovačević, co-author of the book, is a Sarajevo lawyer, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he has run his own law office since 1999. As a legal representative of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he actively participated in the work of the Interreligious Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1999 to 2019. Since 2016, he has been a member of the OSCE/ODIHR Panel of Experts on Freedom of Religion or Belief.
The book was published in London and New York, by a renowned international publisher Routledge.
The book was published in the ICLARS Series on Law and Religion, and its editors are leading international experts in the field of religious studies, including Silvio Ferrari, University of Milan, Italy; W. Colea Durham, Jr., Brigham Young University, USA and Tahir Mahmood, Amity International University, India.
