Special Smiles – Special Olympics BiH

The 2026 National Inclusive Games, organized by Special Olympics Bosnia and Herzegovina, took place in Sarajevo from 3 to 5 September. This major sporting event is dedicated to athletes with intellectual disabilities and stands as one of the most significant gatherings of athletes in the country.

Alongside the competitive events, the "Healthy Athletes" program—which offers free preventive health screenings and consultations for athletes based on the Special Olympics International model—was also implemented.

The Faculty of Dental Medicine and the Dental Clinical Center, University of Sarajevo participated in the "Special Smiles" health initiative. A 17-member team—comprising dentists, dental nurses, and students—conducted dental examinations for all the athletes and provided individual advice on how to improve their oral health.

We are delighted to have had the opportunity to participate in this important event and to contribute to improving the health of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
