NDH Anti-Semitic policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina UNSA Open Lecture


On the occasion of the Holocaust Victims Remembrance Day, the University of Sarajevo organized and open lecture on the topic of NDH Anti-Semitic policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday 9 March 2017.
The speakers at the lecture, organized by the University of Sarajevo and the Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law, were UNSA Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law representatives: Dr. Elias Tauber, Mr. Sc. Merisa Karovic-Babic and Mr. Sc. Almir Grabovica, and Mr. Sc. Benjamina Londrc Faculty of Law, University of Travnik.

Prof. Zijad Mehic, UNSA Vice-Rector for Arts Culture and Sports delivered an opening address in which he said that that the term Holocaust was used to describe the genocide and all other crimes against humanity and international law which the Nazis and their allies had committed in the period from 1933to 1945t by systematically and methodically killing tens of millions of people and children.
Research Associate Dr. Elias Tauber said that debate aimed to present to academic community of Sarajevo and especially students more about the Holocaust and how that happened and thinking about what to do to never happen again. Dr. Tauber said that the Institute organized annually a panel discussion about the Holocaust.

Mr. Sc. Benjamina Londrc, said that coexistence with the Jews in Bosnia and Herzegovina was not only the story of the Jews but of all the peoples who had lived in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the past 500 years.
The focus of Mr. Sc. Londrc’s lecture was the legal position of the Jewish community until World War II, and during the NDH. In addition, she gave a brief overview of the most important legislation of this period, since the arrival of Jews on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian period and the period of the First World War and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

Mr. Sc. Merisa Karovic-Babic spoke about the National Socialist racial policy in the period from 1933 to 1938, while Mr. Sc. Almir Grabovica gave a lecture entitled “The implementation of anti-Semitic laws: yellow tape, forced labor, eviction from their apartments.”
