“Slovenian Historiography Day”

“Slovenian Historiography Day”

Organized by the Institute for Contemporary History in Ljubljana and the UNSA Institute for History, the “Slovenian Historiography Day” took place at the University of Sarajevo on Thursday, 11 December 2014.

The disintegration of Yugoslavia was accompanied by the disintegration of the Yugoslav historiography, and in recent years, certain efforts were made to the mutual understanding of development trends and developments in individual national, post-Yugoslav historiography. The Slovene historiography in recent years made especially significant steps in the field of researching repression at the end of the Second World War and tombs in which were buried those who had been killed at the end of the war. These facts are important, not only for the Slovenian, but also for Bosnia and Herzegovina's history, considering that in those graves were buried Bosnians who had been at the end of the war, and who, for various reasons, mainly as members of the defeated forces of the Independent State of Croatia, and also some as civilians seeking the refuge in the Slovenian territory.

In addition to researching repression at the end of the WW2, Slovene historiography has achieved significant results in other fields, such as researching the breakup of Yugoslavia and Slovenia's position at that time.

Those issues, as well as the organization of the Slovene historiography, research policy and trends in Slovene historiography, were presented by the historians from Slovenia, the Institute for Contemporary History. The presentation was followed by an open discussion from the experience of Slovenian historiography, contributing to further development of historiography in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Within the “Slovenian Historiography Day”, director of the Institute for Contemporary History, Dr. Damijan Gustin and associates Dr. George Gasparic, Dr. Andrej Pancur and M.Sc. Tadeja Tominsek Cehulic were speakers.

Dr. Damijan Gustin presented the Slovenian historiography in the 20th century, the organization, research policy and trends. The achievements of the Slovene historiography of modern times were presented by Dr. Jure Gasparic. In the field of social history, M.Sc. Tadeja Tominsek Cehulic presented a research of World War II and post-war repression in Slovenia victims. Within this research, for the decade and a half, the Institute has been making a list of all victims regardless of the manner of their participation in the war and the circumstances of the death. They concluded that the number reaches 99000, standing for 6.7% of population from that time. Dr. Andrej Pancur presented the new trends in the field of digital humanities, whose results can be seen on the Sistory (www.sistory.si) website.

The aim was to inform the expert and general public in Bosnia and Herzegovina on the organization of research in the field of historiography in Slovenia, especially on some recent results and research projects, which are also important for BH historiography.
