Teaching, scientific and research work and artistic-research work is carried out at the University of Sarajevo within 30 organisational units (25 faculties and academies, 5 institutes) and 72 sub-organisational units (4 university centres, 30 faculties, 23 laboratories and 15 faculty centres). The comprehensiveness of the University is reflected in the presence of humanistic, social, medical, natural, mathematical, biotechnical, and technical sciences and arts.
The University of Sarajevo offers 236 study programmes in the 1st Cycle, 185 study programmes in the 2nd Cycle, 4 integrated study programmes, and 93 programmes in the 3rd cycle. Out of this number, 9 are taught in English (two in the first cycle, seven in the second cycle, and one in an integrated programme).
The growth of lifelong learning programmes is also visible at the university - 51 such programmes are currently underway.

In 2016, 877 teachers (full professors, associate professors and assistant professors) and 429 associates (senior assistants, senior lecturers, assistants, lecturers and methodologists) were employed full time.
65 researchers were engaged in the scientific-research process at the institutes of the University, including 8 scientific advisors, 8 senior scientific associates, 16 scientific associates, 4 expert advisers, 20 senior professional associates and 11 expert associates.
When it comes to supporting the teaching process, at the University of Sarajevo, 1 284 employees are engaged in full time positions in professional services, administration and maintenance.
A total of 3 477 articles were indexed in all three indexes of the Core Citation Index Expanded, the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index in the period from 1970 to 2016. This number can be considered as the smallest possible number of published articles because there were cases where authors did not specify the university in the field of address in WoS, but only the name of the faculty and address.
When it comes to citing works of teachers and associates of the University of Sarajevo, such articles have been cited 18 537 times (or 16 024 times without self-citations). These 16 024 citations appeared in 13 564 articles.
103 TEMPUS projects were implemented in cooperation with 135 European universities (83 as partners, 16 as academic coordinators and 4 as grant-holders). There were 38 FP7 projects: as well as 19 ERASMUS MUNDUS projects in cooperation with 55 EU universities. The University of Sarajevo has signed 110 international cooperation agreements.
